Charity Hickory Golf Event a Success

Ash Valley Golf Club hosted its Hickory Golf Championship, in aid of Herts Air Ambulance, on the Club's popular Little Links course. Prior to the event, the Course had been overhauled and was in wonderful condition for the start of play.

The championship had attracted interest from members and friends of the Club, who were eager to test their golfing skills with equipment from golf's 'golden age.' All the clubs pre-dated 1930, and had been kindly donated by Mr Dave Rose, of Hickory Golf Days UK, for which everyone was truly grateful.

Club Professional, Steve Barker, gave all the competitors a brief history lesson before they set off to do their in the hot morning sunshine. Early indications suggest that scoring well was going to be difficult. And so it proved. At the close of play, two players were tied together at the top of the leaderboard, with respectable scores of 64. A sudden death play-off was declared between players James O'Sullivan and Paul Hopkins. Overall victory, and the Newman Trophy, went to Paul Hopkins, who held his nerve to edge out James, a member of the Club's greens staff, who had to be content with the best gross prize for his day's efforts.

The day was just one of many events planned throughout the year to help raise funds for the Herts Air Ambulance, who were instrumental in helping save the life of Steve Barker, the Club Pro, last year.

Next on the calendar is the Club's charity day AM/AM on 8th July. Entry forms are available to download from the Club's website - www.ashvalley.co.uk/charity - or from the Clubhouse.
