Competition Corner - Jan 2022

The winter fixture list continues at a pace. All the competitions so far have been well supported. In December, Richard Astwood admirably defended his Turkey Trott crown he had won last year with 37 points. Club Captain Dave White finished in a respectable second with 33 and Graham Jackson was third only one point behind Dave.

Unfortunately due to weather conditions the New Year’s Day “Flags” competition was delayed by 7 days. Hosted by Mark Dowling, the “Flags” made a long awaited appearance on January 8th. A strong field set off for glory but they all knew “there could be only ONE”!!! Most of the flags reached the 16th hole which considering the conditions was a fantastic effort. The luckless Fred Tyne ended up as the “strongest player in the field” with Mark Dowling winning his own donation of a bottle of wine on the 16th for the longest drive. Mark Forster won nearest the pin on 5 for the other bottle.

The ever steady Ricky Knight made the 17th green with his flag but failed to hole out, finishing just behind, and it galls me to say this, Adam Hicks. Adam actually managed to hole his put on 17 to take the glory and the money.

The midweek Stableford had a poor showing of only 5 players. I do believe the cold was too much to bear. However Mark Daisley managed to scrape a narrow victory over Alan Webb by a solitary point.

The Saturday monthly Stableford was well supported. In foggy conditions the scoring was amazing. Three players vied for third on the same score pf 33 points (Mitch Garner, Johnno Oakley and Mark Daisley). Mark snaring third on countback from Mitch and Johnno, Adam Senior had a superb 35 points but was a huge 3 points behind Mick O’Connor on 38.

Neil Galloway stormed through the field on the Sunday Stableford to claim his maiden victory with 34 points narrowly beating Geoff “Gunny” Rook into second by one point. Glenn Evans showed a glimmer of a return to form in third with 32.

The final event of January was the superbly contested Winter Scramble. Frosty conditions greeted the players, and the excitement was palpable in the clubhouse before the groups set off. Winners of the two previous Scrambles Graham, Mark and Mark finished third with a net 66. Ian Shipp, Ricky Knight and Fred Tyne ended as runners up on 63. The in form Mark Daisley and Richard Astwood, accompanied by Mitch Garner returned an astonishing net 61 to claim victory and bragging rights in the clubhouse.
