September 2017

The last month of the summer season is always exciting. By its end we would all know who would be collecting the honours board trophies and looking forward to see their names in gold. The Medal winners were Ken Chapman for the Mid-week and Paul Gregory for the Monthly. Both players returning scores under par. Once again there was a new format for everyone to try in the Throw - out holes competition. Rather than returning an eighteen hole medal score, competitors could discard their three worst holes. It was a nice twist on the medal round and universally liked. Karl Brown took the day with a nett score of 53 with Gerry Smith just one behind on 54. The Mid-week Stableford was won by Steve Monks with a very credible 34 points in terrible conditions. And in the final round of this year’s Stableford Cup Kevin Tomkins produced a seasons best performance to emerge victorious. It wouldn’t be enough to take the overall title though. That honour went to Mark Dowling who just edged out John Dixon by the closest of margins.

The Cyril Pooley Memorial is played over consecutive Saturdays at the end of the month. It provides the last chance for personal glory, for all those that still hold out hopes of a trophy at the annual presentation evening. In the first round Gerry Smith played some excellent golf to record 38 points and the half way lead. There were many players ready for Gerry to slip up in round two but despite not playing his best Gerry managed do hold off John Dixon to claim a well deserved victory. John Waters, out to prove that his Masters title was no fluke, carried home the honour of winning the second round.

All that remained was to calculate all the scores in the season long competitions. Kevin Tomkins proved that he is more than just the Eclectic specialist by winning the Handicap Championship with Karl Brown taking the runner-up spot. John Dixon was rewarded for an excellent effort in all competitions with the crown of Club Champion. Once again Karl Brown was so close in the runner-up position. There was a four way tie on 54 in the popular Summer Eclectic. After all the adjustments had been made Karl Brown finished fourth, this year Kevin Tomkins would have to settle for third, Steve Monks was as close as you could get in second, which meant that Vice-Captain James O’Sullivan could celebrate a victory this year at last.

Thank you to everyone who supported the competitions this season. If you weren’t successful this year then there is always next year to look forward to. You’ll be pleased to know that the Winter Fixture List is available from the clubhouse. Don’t forget to enter the Foursomes Premier League which once again promises to be a great addition to the more traditional winter events.

Presentation Night this year will be at the Catherine Wheel on October14th. Everyone is invited. Sign up in the clubhouse.

Well played to you all.
